It certainly was an eventful week.

Personally, I thought the Reverend Doctor President Barack Obama was a bit pitchy, in his rendition of Amazing Grace at his trial sermon.

But church folk are having none of it.  You cannot say one single solitary word of derision about the President's foray into the pastoral arts without a rapid and aggressive defense from the faithful.  If Barack Obama wasn't the black people's president before, he certainly without a doubt is the black people's president after his Friday eulogy of Clementa Pinkney.

There is a long standing tradition within the black church of tolerating less than prodigious musical performance as long as you are raising up your voice to glorify the Lord.  In his efforts to make a joyful noise it seems the president is to be the beneficiary of this forbearance.  President Obama seems to have been conferred with all the spiritual deference that might be accorded to Sister Odell.

Let me suggest that in the future we simply let the musicians throw in an assist.  Church organists are notorious for being world class in their oeuvre and with a 20 second advance hint about what is to come they can set your key and head nod the choir into harmonized and orchestrated back up vocals that you can ride like a magic carpet.

Being both president and pastor in chief is quite a bit of responsibility for one man.  Carrying around all the hopes, dreams and aspirations of a people can be quite a heavy burden.

We will see indeed!

Why racism is good redux

Until I think of something better to say in honor of the holiday that celebrates the life and ideals of the good Doctor King I guess we will revisit the greatest hits of the past.

Not much new to say this year, I pretty much said all I had to say last year.

Although, I am bemused to discover that, rather than going shopping or barbecuing, your Monday holiday has become one of the major dates for ski lodge destinations.

Go figure!

Happy Birthday Doc

Just wanted to holla at you today on your actual birthday before all the madness gets started on your holiday (you know how we do). Although we seem to be getting better we still seem to be struggling with how to celebrate your holiday on Monday. We still ain't figured out whether to barbecue or go shopping.

But I guess this thing in Haiti will give folks plenty of projects to take on if they choose to get involved by giving a day of service. You know I feel like if you hadn't been, you know, assassinated in the prime of your life, you would have led the movement across international borders. I'm guessing after the US you probably would have addressed South Africa first but I'm thinking Haiti would surely have been pretty high on the list of issues to take on. Well maybe we can use this latest tragedy in Haiti to try to bring a little social justice to the island of Hispaniola. It would be a crime to simply put the Haitian society back where it was before the earthquake. Maybe this is an opportunity to make the world a better place by building a better Haiti.

That's about it from here. I am still doing what I can everyday (well, most days) to make sure your sacrifices were not in vain.
